Origin of the word "Yoga":

The word Yoga is derived from the sanskrit word "Yuj" meaning to connect or join as it is believed that yoga helps people unite inner soul and body. 21st June 2020 marks the 6th International Yoga Day.Apart from having religious roots, it has been scientifically proven that yoga disconnects us from the outer world to re-evaluate ourselves. Psychology involves meditation and yoga as one of the recovery procedures. 

One of the procedures is the Suryanamaskar or the Sun salutation.

Why are there 12 asanas in Suryanamaskar?

The number 12 signifies completion. It is known to belong to Pisces which is a spiritual sign that is in constant touch with the energies. Here, 1 signifies the beginning of singular nature of the universe and the number 2 signifies partnership and mutable nature of life. In Christianity, the number 12 is a symbol of faith and devine rule.

These 12 asanas play an important role in maintaining our bodily activities well. 

Yogasanas and their effect on body.

1. PRANAMASANA - Denotes our gratitude to the sun.

2. HASTAUTTASANA- Helps to stretch the body thereby loosening all the knots formed.


3. HASTHAPADASANA- Stretches hamstring and opens hip and shoulder.



4. ASHWA SANCHALASANA- Works for indigestion, constipation and sciatica.



5. DANDASANA- Similar to the plank position. Improves posture and enhances heart rate.


6. ASHTANG NAMASKAR- Also called as the 8-point salute. It reduces tension and anxiety. It strengthens back muscles.



7. BHUJANGASANA- Gives the body a forward stretch amd increases heart rate.



8. ADHOMUKHA SAVASANA- strengthens muscles and increases blood flow.



9. ASHWA SANCHALASANA- Tones abdominal organs.



10. HASTAPADASANA- Strengthens our backbone

11. HASTAUTTASANA- Increases agility


12. TADASANA- Increases flexibility
